London Trip

london trip from Jake Seal on Vimeo.

Me and a couple of friends took a trip to London with our bikes in the hope to ride all the skateparks London has to offer but unfortunately due to the bad weather we didn't get much riding done. A bonus to the bad weather was the visit to the Tate modern.

Heres an edit my friend made of the trip completely created from photographs. Hes been experimenting quite a bit and each edit he makes seams to get better and better. I really need to get my hands on final cut and start playing around too.Id really like to incorporate video into some of my work maybe and just generally get familiar with it.

Inspiration

We were asked on tuesday to start thinking about Artists/Designers that Influence us or appeal to us visually and that relate to the design specialism ( Typography). So I started to do some research referring back to a few of the books I own and I compiled this list of my favourites.

Karel Martens
Vaughan Oliver
Wim Crouwel
Herb Lubalin
Yusaku Kamekura
Massimo Vignelli
Josef Muller-Brockmann
Jan Tschichold

Also two companies design agencies that interest me are:

After figuring out the designers I enjoy most, I realized that the vast majority of it is created within structures, using systems and symmetry. This is definitely the type of work I would like to be producing in the near future. I would love to create clever graphic design with thought and purpose behind it.

Trainspotting

We were given the opening sentence from the movie Trainspotting, along with our specific typeface. We had to rework the text into a way we felt appropriate, completely hand drawn. It was quite time consuming but gave more time to think about what you were doing, slowing the whole process.

When finished this I had it blown up to A1 at Staples and took it to screen print. The results where as followed, It came out quite weathered looking because I only lined in the text in pencil but I think that worked quite well with the tone of the movie. One of my favorite prints were when I was cleaning the screen off the ink bled through onto the paper used to protect the printing bed. The effect was of something that had been somewhere wet and dirty, this also works brilliantly with the nature of the film being Heroin.
